Located less than a mile southwest of the main campus on Newark Bay, NJCU’s primary outdoor athletic complex opened in 1976 and has undergone constant upgrading ever since.
The scenic, waterfront Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex is utilized for practice and games by the men’s soccer, women’s soccer, baseball and softball teams. A 3,000-seat multi-sport stadium and team house is the centerpiece of the complex. Modern bleachers and an enclosed press box were added in 1991. A new practice area was added to the south end of the main stadium in the spring of 1997.
Soccer has two fields to utilize for games and practice. The Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field, comprised of the spacious outfield area of the baseball facility, is the main soccer game facility. The Gothic Knight baseball team competes on the adjacent diamond which features bleacher seating, refurbished dugouts, a pressbox with public address system and a manicured infield. The softball field, located on the northeastern corner of the main stadium field, features new dugouts constructed in 1995, bleacher seating and a well-maintained infield and outfield.
Formerly known as the Tidelands Athletic Complex, the facility was named in memory of Thomas M. Gerrity on October 21, 1995. Gerrity, who served as Athletic Director at then-Jersey City State College from 1958-77, was instrumental in the acquisition and development of the land, adjacent to where historic Roosevelt Stadium once stood, for the multi-sport outdoor facility. He is a charter member of the NJCU Athletic Hall of Fame.
Plans are currently being reviewed to give the entire complex an impressive facelift that will allow it to rival the outdoor facilities of conference opponents.
NOTE TO FANS: For safety reasons, no pets are allowed at any athletic events held at the Thomas M. Gerrity Complex. Fans with pets will be asked to leave the facility.
