NEWARK, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | After ranking in the top 30 in Division III in scoring offense in each of the last four seasons, goals haven't been as easy to come by in the early stages of the 2012 campaign for the
New Jersey City University women's soccer team. On Friday night at the Scarlet Raiders Soccer Classic at Rutgers-Newark's Alumni Field, neither team collected many shots, but St. Joseph's College (LI) was able to put away three attempts as the Eagles blanked NJCU, 3-0.
St. Joe's (2-1-1) outshot NJCU (1-2-1) by a slim 13-10 margin; the Knights had a 6-4 edge in the first 45 minutes while the Eagles outshot NJCU 9-4 in the second period. The start of the game was delayed 20 minutes due to lightning. St. Joseph's leads the all-time series, 8-1.
Despite just four first-half shots by St. Joe's, junior midfielder
Elizabeth Pulaski (North Babylon, NY) was able to put away half of those chances, scoring in the fourth and 15
th minutes before junior midfielder
Samantha Garcia (Central Islip, NY) added an 82
nd minute insurance goal for the opposition.
NJCU sophomore goalkeeper
BRITTANY HOFFMAN (McMurray, PA/Peters Township) made six saves, including five in the second half.
SJC junior keeper
Kayla Flowers (Patchogue, NY) made three saves to record the Eagles' second shutout of the season. Junior midfielder
Kathleen Borrelli (Patchogue, NY) and freshman forward
Jamianne Eden (Ronkonkoma, NY) collected assists for the Eagles.
NJCU sophomore defender
DEVON WILLIAMS (Neptune City, NJ/Neptune) was the lone Gothic Knight with multiple shots, finishing with five (one on goal). Both of NJCU's losses this year have been shutouts.
SJC gained a 1-0 lead and received what proved to be the winning goal just 3:46 into the action when
Pulaski's shot from the near left sideline eluded the grasp of
Hoffman for her first tally of the season.
A little more than 10 minutes later she stuck again as
Borrelli's corner kick from the right side was slipped into the right side of the net by
Pulaski for a 2-0 margin at 14:23.
That score remained for the next 67 minutes before
Eden took a shot that was knocked down with a diving save by
Hoffman. But the NJCU defense could not clear the loose ball and
Garcia put away the carom at 81:46 for her third goal of the season and the final marker of the contest.
NJCU looks to move back to .500 on Saturday, September 8 in day two of the tournament when it meets Widener University at 5 p.m. Host Rutgers-Newark were 3-2 overtime victors over the Pride on Friday evening.
