STATEN ISLAND, NY (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University was awarded four penalty kicks, but only converted two of them and suffered a 3-2 loss at the College of Staten Island in non-conference women's soccer on September 11.
CSI sophomore goalkeeper
Victoria Donegan (Staten Island, NY) made 13 saves, including one official stop of a penalty kick to spark the Dolphins (3-1-0) over NJCU (1-3-2) in the 'Bayonne Bridge Series.' CSI snapped NJCU's five-game winning streak in the series. NJCU, which still leads the all-time series 7-2 (27-13 goals differential), outshot the hosts, 20-17.
Senior center midfielder
BRIANNA TAYLOR (Linden, NJ/Linden) scored both of NJCU's goals, her fourth and fifth of the season, on penalty kick chances in the waning moments—making it a 3-1 game at 84:54 after CSI jumped out to a 3-0 lead, before making it a one-goal game with 1:44 remaining (88:16).
Sophomore forward
Samantha Wysokowski (Staten Island, NY) scored twice for the Dolphins, netting the second and third goals of the game for her fifth and sixth markers of the season.
Junior forward
Demi-Jean Martorano (Staten Island, NY) scored her fifth goal of the year in the 12
th minute for a 1-0 lead before assisting on the second goal. She had a game-high eight shots (three on goal). Sophomore forward

Melissa Gelardi (Staten Island, NY) each had two assists.

CSI struck first at the 11:44 mark as
Galeano and
Gelardi made a pair of touches to
Martorano on a break into the box for a 1-0 lead.
A big play in the game came just seven minutes later. After a foul in the box at the 19:04 mark, sophomore defender
DEVON WILLIAMS (Neptune City, NJ/Neptune) was awarded a penalty kick.
Donegan made the initial save but was whistled for coming off her line too early, giving
Williams a second attempt.
Donegan made a legal save on the second attempt to keep the Knights off the board.
CSI added to its lead at 31:27, as
Martorano and
Galeano started a breakaway up the middle of the field before
Wysokowski used a sliding shot to make it 2-0, which stood at halftime.
NJCU had an 11-6 margin in second half shots, but it was CSI gaining a 3-0 lead at the 63:38 mark as
Wysokowski netted a corner kick from
Gelardi.
The Knights kept the pressure on and began mounting a comeback in the final 10 minutes. After
Gelardi committed a foul in the box,
Taylor was awarded a penalty kick and buried her chance at the 84:54 mark to put NJCU on the board.
With 1:44 remaining in the contest, CSI was whistled for a hand ball in the box after an NJCU shot and again
Taylor stepped to the penalty mark and buried a kick, making it a 3-2 contest. But CSI was able to prevent the Knights from attempting another shot and ran out the clock to survive for a one-goal decision.
NJCU will open New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Saturday, September 15 at 1 p.m. when it visits William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ.
