JERSEY CITY, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Former New Jersey City University men's basketball shooting guard and team captain KYLE INGRAM, `10 (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township) has been honored as the 2009-10 winner of the Dennis N. Goodson Memorial Basketball Award. A two-year captain and two-year player for the Gothic Knights from 2008-10, Ingram was honored during halftime of NJCU's 92-41 rout of Vaughn College on December 8.
The award is presented to a men's or women's basketball player who best exemplified the attributes for which Dennis Goodson, a former star point guard for then Jersey City State College from 1983-87, was known. Goodson, a starter on the first Gothic Knight Final Four team in 1986, died suddenly in 2002 at the age of 36 from heart failure. Those attributes included team loyalty, dedication to the sport, competitive spirit on the court, knowledge of the fundamentals of basketball, academic achievement and demonstrated leadership and sportsmanship.
An Academic All-America nominee during his Gothic Knight career, he also was the charismatic face that represented NJCU on trains and buses throughout North Jersey as part of the University's marketing campaigns.
“Kyle did everything with class during his two years at NJCU,” noted fourth-year head coach MARC BROWN. “He was the epitome of a student-athlete—a great student and a very good player. He always did everything I asked of him and he did a great job while he was here.”
Ingram had a productive career for the Knights on the court. In 49 career games, he scored 453 points, with 136 rebounds, 73 assists and 54 steals. His 86 career three-point field goals (86-275) rank eighth in program history while his .313 three-point field goal percentage is 12th best. He also was an 81 percent career free throw shooter.
As a junior he scored 315 points, averaging 12.6 points per game, which ranked 12th in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, and was fourth in the league in threes made. He scored a career-best 27 points in a win at John Jay College on January 26, 2009.
While his scoring diminished as a senior, he posted several impressive performances. Most notable was 17-point outburst on December 5, 2009 when NJCU stunned then nationally #8 ranked Richard Stockton College, 76-71, on the road. Ingram shot 5-for-5 from three-point range in the triumph.
“Receiving this particular award made me aware of the impact an athlete can have in all the aspects of student body life,” Ingram said. “Reading the trophy it had attributes such as leadership, academic prowess and sportsmanship which are not just athletic qualities. It made me proud that my other achievements were recognized.”
Ingram, a May 2010 graduate with a 3.33 grade point average and a degree in Media Arts, currently serves as an assistant men's basketball coach at Gloucester County College, on a staff that includes his father, Butch, while pursuing a career as a film maker, director and writer.
