Located less than a mile southwest of the main campus, adjacent to Newark Bay, NJCU’s primary outdoor athletic complex opened in 1976 and has undergone constant upgrading ever since.
The scenic, waterfront Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex is utilized for practice and games by the men’s soccer, women’s soccer, baseball and softball teams.
A 3,000-seat multi-sport stadium and team house is the centerpiece of the complex. The main playing field, once used for football when NJCU sponsored the program, was officially transformed into the school’s soccer complex during the 2009 season and rededicated as The Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field. Modern bleachers and an enclosed press box were added in 1991. A new practice area was added to the south end of the main stadium in the spring of 1997.
The stadium’s spectator area features great site lines with chair back seating available near midfield. The stadium also features one of the finest press boxes in the region.
The soccer programs now have three fields to practice on—the main stadium field, the spacious outfield area of the baseball facility which was the former McNulty Field, and a compact practice field that has been established between the main playing field and Newark Bay to allow the teams to work on technical aspects of the sport in an enclosed area.
New additions to the soccer stadium include a state-of-the-art wireless scoreboard and public address system. Competing teams will also enjoy new Kwik Goal team benches added in 2012, which will be situated on the opposite side of the facility from the fans. A layer of green, protective capping has been installed adjacent to both sidelines on the soccer field.
The Gothic Knight baseball team competes on the adjacent diamond which features bleacher seating, dugouts, a press box with public address system and a manicured infield.
The softball field, located on the northeastern corner of the main stadium field, features dugouts constructed in 1995 and modified in 2013, bleacher seating and a well-maintained infield and outfield.
A brand-new concession stand has been built adjacent to the stadium seating, providing spectators an opportunity to purchase warm food, beverages and snacks during events
Formerly known as the Tidelands Athletic Complex, the facility was named in memory of Thomas M. Gerrity on October 21, 1995. Gerrity, who served as Athletic Director at then-Jersey City State College from 1958-77, was instrumental in the acquisition and development of the land, adjacent to where historic Roosevelt Stadium once stood, for the multi-sport outdoor facility. He is a charter member of the NJCU Athletic Hall of Fame.
NOTE TO FANS: For safety reasons, no pets are allowed at any athletic events held at the Thomas M. Gerrity Complex. Fans with pets will be asked to leave the facility.
