AARP Resources:
The Coordinator of Athletic Academic Retention oversees all retention efforts of NJCU student-athletes from the day they arrive on campus through their graduation. The Coordinator of Athletic Academic Retention manages NJCU’s study hall program, monitors progress reports, and serves as the department liaison to NJCU’s Center for Student Success (CSS).

In 2011, the NJCU athletics department launched NJCU’s Athletic Academic Retention Program (AARP), which provides individual study plans to all student-athletes and conducts evaluations and assessments for all student-athletes at the conclusion of each semester until their graduation. Four ‘Retention Coaches’ assist the coordinator as part of the AARP.

The AARP program compliments the efforts of NJCU’s two Athletic Academic Advisors, with the goal of increasing the retention rate of student-athletes at the University.

AARP Summary

The Coordinator of Athletic Academic Retention and Retention Coaches reserve the right to administer individual study plans to all student-athletes.  The following will apply:

  • All incoming student-athletes (freshmen & transfers) will be automatically admitted to the program
  • Any returning student-athlete who utilized his/her NJAC waiver will be automatically admitted to the program
  • Any returning student-athlete whose GPA is less than 2.5 will automatically admitted to the program
  • Each student-athlete will be required to attend an initial ‘in take’ session in The HUB.
  • Each student-athlete will be required to attend tutoring sessions as outlined by HUB advisors
  • Each athletic team will be assigned a ‘Retention Coach’, and will meet individually with said coach on a biweekly basis throughout the academic year
  • Each student-athlete will attend at least TWO HOURS of study hall on a weekly basis

Evaluations and assessments for all student-athletes will be conducted during the middle of the semester, and they will remain with AARP in some capacity until graduation:

  • Individualized assessments will determine the level of participation over the course of their tenure.
  • Any continuing student-athlete who falls below the aforementioned requirements will be admitted to the program, and all will be monitored closely through communication with professors, tutors, and meetings with their respective Retention Coach.
  • Retention Coaches can distribute and collect all forms from the student-athletes at the study table if they haven’t received them:
    • Class excuse forms
    • Progress reports
    • Database forms
    • Class schedules
