JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) |
The New Jersey City University women's bowling team has earned a No. 10 ranking in the nation in Division I, II and III in the first-ever National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) Media Poll recently released. The No. 10 ranking is identical to NJCU's current ranking in the NTCA Coaches Poll announced on December 13.

NJCU, then 24-8 overall at the time of the voting, is currently 35-22 and 6-3 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) and tied for second place in the league entering this weekend's second NEC meet of the season in Altoona, Pa. The Knights received 162 points in the poll—just 22 behind ninth place University of Nebraska.

In a sport with many new programs competing, the nation's top programs appear to be evident, as all 20 teams ranked in the NTCA Media Poll were also among the top 20 in December's coaches' poll, and some schools earned an identical ranking.

Valparaiso University (IN), ranked No. 1 in the coaches' poll, is also the No. 1 team in the country in the media poll with a 30-8 mark and 369 points. Meanwhile, NJCU's NEC rivals, Fairleigh Dickinson University (45-12, 345 points) and Sacred Heart University (37-9, 320 points), were voted #2 and #3, respectively, in the media poll, to match the coaches' poll. Sam Houston State University (40-13, 300 points) is fourth in the media poll, followed by the University of Central Missouri (26-12, 261 points). Valpo received 10 first place votes, with FDU claiming four.

Rounding out the top 10 is defending NCAA champion, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (37-9, 254 points), Vanderbilt University (30-13, 248 points), Arkansas State University (27-11, 200 points), Nebraska (18-6, 184 points) and NJCU.

NJCU, at No. 10, is the third highest ranked member of the Northeast Conference, and nine of the 10 NEC schools are ranked in the poll. Saint Francis University (Pa.) is 13th, Kutztown University and Monmouth University are among three schools tied for 14th place, with Saint Peter's College (17th), Adelphi University (19th) and St. Francis College (NY) (20th) also among the Top 20. NEC member Long Island University was the lone NEC school not in the poll.

There will be four NTCA media polls conducted this season to compliment six schedules NTCA coaches' polls. Voters include select athletic communications directors from sports information departments across the country and industry media representatives. The NJCU sports information office is one of 16 voting institutions.
