BROOKLYN, NY (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | The
New Jersey City University women's bowling team wrapped up a weekend where it unexpectedly did not live up to its ranking by finishing seventh overall and posting a 2-3 record on the final day of the Terriers New Year Knockdown hosted by St. Francis College (NY).
NJCU, finishing seventh of eight teams in the tournament, went 3-7 during the weekend as its overall record fell to 27-15, while its winning percentage dropped from .750 to .643. NJCU entered the tournament ranked #10 nationally in Division I, II and III by the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA).
In five quad-Baker matches, NJCU defeated #14 Saint Francis University (Pa.), 832-784, and crushed Hampton University, 763-606. However, the Knights lost a heart-breaking opening contest to host and #20 St. Francis (NY) by two pins, 719-717.
Defending national champion and #4 ranked University of Maryland Eastern Shore edged NJCU 779-742. Meanwhile, unranked Long Island University, which the Gothic Knights had been 12-0 all-time against entering the weekend, defeated NJCU for the second time in as many days, 841-768.
In the final standings, #2 Fairleigh Dickinson University won the tournament with a 10-0 record. Host St. Francis (NY) was second while UMES, the only other team with a winning record on the weekend (8-2) was third. Saint Francis (Pa.) was fourth and #12 Delaware State University placed fifth.
NJCU's 3882 total Baker pins were the fourth highest on Sunday and the Knights exceeded 200 in six of 20 games.
In the opening match NJCU led St. Francis (NY), 519-516, heading into the final game before the Terriers edged the Knights, 203-198, and won the match by two pins. St. Francis had a 368-315 lead after defeating NJCU in game two, 209-137, before the Knights responded by winning game three, 204-138. NJCU's four-game totals were 178-137-294-198; the Terriers collected scores of 159-209-148-203.
NJCU was dominant in the second match against Saint Francis (Pa.), exceeding 200 in three of four games with totals of 202-192-223-215. The Red Flash bowled well, throwing a 784 in defeat (172-226-173-213). NJCU's 832 was its highest quad-Baker score of the season.
The Knights continued to bowl well in match three, tossing a 183-187-206-192 combo in its loss to #4 UMES. But the Hawks were 37 pins better, with a line of 204-169-205-201.
NJCU again faced LIU while the Blackbirds were achieving impressive scores and with the inability to play defense in bowling, the Knights' line of 183-187-206-192 was not enough. LIU won by 73 pins, 841-768, with game scores of 166-231-220-224.
NJCU hammered Hampton in the final match by 157 pins, tossing scores of 170-224-198-171. The Pirates logged scores of 191-138-186-167.
Sophomore
NICOLE BAGINSKY (South River, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick) finished 12
th in the 50-woman field in Saturday's individual standings released after the tournament. She had total wood of 1,001 and a 200.20 average. Junior
KELLY DAUNNO (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) was 17
th with a 194.20 average and 971 total wood. Her 269 high game was the second highest of any player in the tournament. Senior
JENNIFER DAUNNO (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) was 24
th overall with 894 pinfall.
NJCU will look to return to its Top 10 status when it competes in the Kutztown Invitational in Reading, Pa. The three-day event begins on Friday, January 27 at 1 p.m.
