EWING, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)...New Jersey City University sophomore DESERIA SANDERS (Lakewood, NJ/Long Branch) captured the league title in the long jump to highlight the Gothic Knight women's outdoor track and field team's performance on May 8 at the 2010 New Jersey Athletic Conference Track and Field Championship, hosted by The College of New Jersey. Much of the championship was contested against fierce, gusty winds.
In the scoring system that awards points on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for first through eighth place in each event, the Gothic Knights collected 22 points, finishing tied for eighth place overall with Rutgers-Newark. The College of New Jersey (219) won the league title for the 18th consecutive year and 25th time in 26 seasons. The event was the final of the 2010 regular season for NJCU.
Sanders, who already owns an NCAA qualifying provisional distance this season (5.57 meters), claimed the NJAC championship in the event with a distance of 5.33 meters, winning by .05 meters in an event she placed second in as a rookie in 2009.
Freshman AUDREY WILSON (Deptford, NJ/Deptford) had a solid day in the 100-meter dash, placing second of seven in the finals of the event in 12.59 seconds. The time exceeded the ECAC qualifying standard and was her second fastest mark this year (12.58). Wilson was eighth of 20 in the 200-meter dash in 26.91 seconds.
In the 100-meter hurdle finals, freshman #SATTIRAH JOHNSON (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) qualified for the ECACs with a seventh place time of 16.32 seconds. In the 100 hurdle preliminaries, Johnson was eighth of 12 in 16.89 seconds while senior CANDICE BELLAMY (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) listed ninth in 17.44. Bellamy finished eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 9.68 meters.
Sophomore MELLISA GOODWIN (Howell, NJ/Howell) listed 12th in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:17.83 and freshman KYE'AIRRE CARY (Newark, NJ/Queen of Peace) was 13th in the 400 meters (1:08.30).
Sophomore KALEEMA LEWIS (Jersey City, NJ/St. Aloysius) finished 15th in the 800 meters (3:12.58) and senior ERIN DOUGHERTY (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) was also 15th in the 5000 meters (28:31.81).
NJCU's 4x100-meter relay squad of sophomore IRIS WILCOX (Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton), Sanders, Goodwin and Wilson was in position for a Top 3 finish before an errant baton exchange did not allow the quarter to finish.
