GLASSBORO, NJ…Even on one leg, New Jersey City University senior five-time All-American EBONY BARNES (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) is still the fastest woman in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Barnes withdrew from competition after two events due to a nagging injury, yet still won the league crown in the 100-meter dash for the third time in four years, and freshman DESERIA SANDERS (Lakewood, NJ/Long Branch) won the 200-meter dash en route to being named the first-ever NJAC Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Rookie of the Year, as the Gothic Knight women’s outdoor track and field team placed sixth overall at the 2009 NJAC Track and Field Championships, hosted by Rowan University on May 2.

In the scoring system that awards points on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for first through eighth place in each event, the Gothic Knights collected 35 points, finishing tied for sixth overall with Montclair State University. The College of New Jersey (278) won the league title for the 17th consecutive year and 24th time in 25 seasons. Richard Stockton College was second (153), followed by Rowan (106), Ramapo College (76), Kean University (64), NJCU, Montclair, Rutgers University-Camden (10) and Rutgers-Newark (10).

Barnes placed first overall among 12 sprinters in the 100-meter dash preliminaries in 12.50 seconds, then easily claimed the league title for the second straight season, taking the 100 finals in 12.58 seconds—winning by 9/100th of a second. Barnes finished her career as league champion in the 100 in 2006, 2008 and 2009. She also anchored the 4x100-meter relay but withdrew from the 200-meter dash after competing in the 100 finals. Both times form Barnes exceeded the ECAC Championship standard of 12.80.

With Barnes unable to run in the 200, Sanders ensured an athlete in green and gold would continue to reign as league champion. Sanders, whose highest indoor season championship finish was third, blew away the field in the 200-meter dash in an ECAC-qualifying time of 25.96 seconds—defeating the 23-woman race by 48/100th of a second.

Sanders led the long jump for much of the competition, before finishing second of 13 athletes in an ECAC qualifying distance of 5.30 meters (17-4.75). A personal best mark, it exceeded the ECAC distance of 5.25 meters.

Sanders also was seventh of 17 in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.59 seconds and helped the 400-meter relay place fourth overall as she was voted the NJAC Rookie of the Year by the league’s nine coaches. It is the first year that a Rookie of the Year has been awarded in track and field.

The 4x100-meter relay of Sanders, junior CANDICE BELLAMY (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia), freshman MELLISA GOODWIN (Howell, NJ/Howell) and Barnes was fourth overall in 51.23 seconds.

Bellamy placed ninth in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.78 seconds and was ninth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.42 meters (4-7.75). Bellamy also listed 10th in the long jump with a distance of 4.45 meters (14-7.25). Goodwin was 11th in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:15.89 and 13th in the 400-meter dash in 1:05.76.

In the 800-meter run, freshman DANIELLE COLON (Pleasantville, NJ/Pleasantville) was 12th in 2:55.40. In the 1500-meter run, she was 13th in 6:13.41. Junior ERIN DOUGHERTY (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) was 11th in the 5000-meter run in 27:04.00.

NJCU will return to the track on Saturday, May 9 at 10 a.m. in the New York City Challenge at Randall’s Island in New York, NY.
