BUCKNOR, ROBBINS, ROBINSON QUALIFY FOR NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP AS NJCU EXCELS AT 2009 NYC QUALIFYING CHALLENGE

NEW YORK
, NY…Freshman BRIAN BUCKNOR (Irvington, NJ/St. Benedict’s Prep) solidified a spot in the 2009 NCAA Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the 400-meter dash while sophomore MARC ROBINSON (Maplewood, NJ/St. Benedict’s Prep) and freshman ISHMEAL ROBBINS (Irvington, NJ/Irvington) eclipsed the NCAA mark in the 200-meter dash as the New Jersey City University men’s outdoor track and field team excelled on May 9 at the 2009 NYC Qualifying Challenge.
 
There was no team scoring in the event hosted at Icahn Stadium by the Randall’s Island Sports Foundation.
 
Bucknor posted the 11th fastest time in the country this year and provisionally qualified for the NCAAs in the 400-meter dash, timing 48.26 seconds. He won the fourth of nine heats and finished seventh overall among Division I, II and III athletes in a field of 63. He easily surpassed the NCAA standard of 48.50.
 
Robinson provisionally qualified for the NCAAs in the 200-meter dash, placing sixth overall among 14 in the finals in 21.70 seconds, surpassing the NCAA standard of 21.80. It is the 21st fastest time in Division III this year. He also was 10th of 52 in the preliminaries in 22.05 seconds.
 
Robbins placed first overall in the fourth of six preliminaries in a team season’s-best 11.02 seconds, listing 12th of 33, but due to time constraints, did not run in the event final. In the 200-meter dash preliminaries he placed first overall in the first of eight heats and sixth of 52 in 21.82 seconds. He improved that mark in the finals, crossing in seventh place in an NCAA time of 21.74 seconds. It is the 24th fastest time in Division III this year.
 
Sophomore ALEX BEST (Pleasantville, NJ/Pleasantville) timed 2:00.94 in the 800-meter run. He was second in the second of seven heats and placed 35th of 55. In the 1500-meter run, he was 39th in 4:24.82—a team season’s-best mark.
 
The 2009 Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship will be held on May 14-15 at Springfield College’s Blake Track in Springfield, MA. Qualifying for the championship are Robbins in the 100 and 200-meter dash, Robinson in the 200, Bucknor and freshman GARRETT ELLIS (Plainfield, NJ/Union Catholic) in the 400, and sophomore NICK BRITT (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) in the discus. NJCU’s 4x100-meter relay of Bucknor, Robbins, Robinson and Ellis have qualified for the ECACs while Bucknor, Robbins, Best and Ellis will compete in the 4x400-meter relay.

The NJCU Women's Bowling teams has been to the National Collegiate Final Four four times in the first seven years of the championship's history. NJCU appeared in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010, finishing 3rd in 2004 and 2008. NJCU also was fifth in 2005 and 2009.
