SOUTH ORANGE, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)...Freshman CHRISTIAN COX (Cedar Run, NJ/Southern Regional) made a strong first impression in all three sprint events while rookie CHARLES ALLEN (Rosenhayn, NJ/Bridgeton) won the long jump as the New Jersey City University men's indoor track and field team opened a very promising 2009-10 campaign at the Seton Hall University Open, held Sunday at the Sheila & Richard Regan Field House. There was no team scoring.
Cox was third of 35 sprinters in the 60-meter dash preliminaries, qualifying for the ECAC Championship with a time of 7.08 seconds. The ECAC standard is 7.11. He bettered that mark in the finals, when he was third in 7.04 seconds. In the 400-meter dash, Cox placed second of 48 athletes, timing 51.54 seconds. He completed his day by placing fifth of 52 runners in the 200-meter dash at 23.18 seconds.
Allen soared 6.42 meters in the long jump (21-00.75), defeating a field of 11 entrants—nearly a foot further than the second place distance of 6.14 meters. He was 12th of 35 in the 60-meters, timing 7.28 seconds and 16th in the 200 at 23.96.
Sophomore GARRETT ELLIS (Plainfield, NJ/Union Catholic) listed fourth of 48 in the 400 meters with a mark of 52.20 seconds. He was 15th of 52 in the 200, timing 23.93.
Sophomore KARAM ALKHALIL (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional) finished fourth of 21 in the 800-meter run, timing 2:08.41. Freshman EVAN BAYTOPS (Irvington, NJ/Irvington) placed third overall in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.89 seconds, and finished ahead of two Seton Hall athletes. In the 200 meters, he timed 25.18, placing 29th.
Junior CHARLES WAUGH (Camden, NJ/Camden) placed sixth of 48 in the 400 meters in 52.77 seconds, took ninth place in the 60 meters, clocking 7.23 seconds and 10th in the 200-meter dash in 23.61 seconds.
Freshman SHAMID PARKER (Irvington, NJ/Arts (Newark)) was 18th in both the 200 meters (24.19) and 400 meters (54.33). Freshman STEVEN GUEYE (Newark, NJ/St. Mary's, Elizabeth) was 12th in the 1,000-meter run and 16th in the 1-mile run (6:37.65). Junior ORALDO AUSTIN (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) leaped 5.14 meters (16-10.50) in the long jump and 11.51 meters (37-9.25) in the triple jump.
After the holiday break, NJCU will return to the track on Friday, January 22 at 9 a.m. in the Great Dane Classic, hosted by the University of Albany at the 168th Street Armory in New York, NY
