Junior setter ALEX JOHANESEN (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) became the third player in school history to distribute 2,000 career assists, but the New Jersey City University women’s volleyball team dropped both matches of a tri-match, falling to Lancaster Bible College, 3-1 (25-23, 26-28, 17-25, 22-25) and host Stevenson University, 3-0 (10-25, 22-25, 19-25), on Saturday at Stevenson’s Student Union Gym.
 
With the setbacks, NJCU falls to 5-13 overall. Lancaster Bible was 12-12 after the match, while Stevenson, which went 2-0 in the event, is 10-11. It was NJCU’s first-ever meeting with both schools in women’s volleyball.
 
In the loss to the Chargers, sophomore outside hitter TABITHA JORDAN (Bayonne, NJ/Memorial) chalked up her sixth double-double of the season, landing a career-best 15 kills (15-8-46), with 12 digs and two aces. Johanesen, who entered the match with 1,980 assists, dished 27 helpers, going over the 2,000-assist threshold during the second set. She added eight digs and two aces.
 
Freshman libero AMANDA DOPICO (West New York, NJ/Memorial) defended 23 digs while senior outside hitter MELISSA LOO (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) tallied 16 digs and five kills. Sophomore opposite KIARA MARTINEZ (Newark, NJ/East Side) had 13 digs and three aces.
 
NJCU won the opening set, 25-23, hitting .205 in the frame as a team with 12 kills (12-4-39), and then lost the second set, as it extended into extra points. The Knights could have grabbed a 2-0 lead in the match, but Lancaster won 28-26, despite 10 more kills by NJCU. The Knights only had three kills as a team in the third set, and despite hitting .188 and landing 10 winners, fell 25-22. For the match, the Knights registered 35 kills and hit .085 (35-22-153).
 
In the second match, the Mustangs hit .242 as a team with 39 kills (39-15-99). NJCU had a -.016 attack rate with nine kills (9-10-64). Johanesen finished with nine assists. Jordan collected 10 digs and four kills.
 
NJCU is back in action on Tuesday, October 13 at 7 p.m. when it faces Ramapo College in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match at the Bradley Center in Mahwah, NJ.
