NJCU CUTS ITS DIVISION III FOOTBALL PROGRAM

JERSEY CITY, NJ…New Jersey City University announced this afternoon the elimination of its football program.  The decision was made by the senior administration of the University and approved by NJCU's president.

Because of the severe budget reductions mandated by the State of New Jersey for fiscal year 2004, NJCU had to make difficult decisions in order to balance its budget and contain tuition increases.  The elimination of the football program was one such decision.

Dr. Carlos Hernández, President of NJCU, said, “After reviewing the financial information that was gathered for our annual budget preparation, it was clear that a hard choice had to be made.  Reduce support across the board for all varsity programs – and, in the process, limit the opportunity for other programs to achieve the excellence we seek – or eliminate the costly program to enable us to provide more support for the remaining 14 varsity programs.”

In addition, NJCU's budget analysis indicated that a substantial investment would be needed annually simply to maintain the football program.

Dr. Alene Graham, NJCU vice president for student affairs, stated, “Although the morale is understandably low at this point, I have full confidence in athletic director, Larry Schiner, the head football coach, Arnold Jeter, and the coaching staff.  They, along with the student-athletes, have persevered despite the lack of resources that are available to many of their competitors.  This decision in no way represents a lessening of NJCU's commitment to excellence.  The action taken will strengthen our commitment to excellence in our remaining athletic programs.”

Larry Schiner, NJCU director of athletics, commented, “Of course, I am extremely disappointed that the University has decided to end the football program.  This decision will be especially difficult for those student-athletes and coaches who will be affected directly.  I am grateful for the valuable contributions they have made to the University and for their dedication to the program.”
