Julio Cengarle begins his second season as assistant coach at New Jersey City University in 2008, after joining the staff of head coach Cristian da Silva in 2007. He is regarded as a very tactical coach by da Silva.
In his first season in 2007, Cengarle was part of the coaching staff when da Silva was named New Jersey Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, finishing 18-5-1 overall and 7-1-1 in the league. The Gothic Knights won their first-ever outright NJAC regular season title, advanced to the championship game for the second year in a row and the third time in its history, tied the school record for consecutive wins (7) and was selected for the NCAA Division III Tournament for the second time in three years—reaching the Sweet 16. He also helped the Knights to a No. 7 national ranking by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America—the highest in school history.
Prior to coaching at NJCU, he was the assistant coach at St. Joseph’s Regional High School in Montvale, NJ, also working alongside da Silva. He was also a coach for the Allendale Americans and the New Jersey Pasco Stallions youth programs in Wayne, NJ. He has also coached at “Futbol Success”.
An accomplished player as a midfielder, Cengarle was a 1998 First Round Draft Pick of the Colorado Rapids (11th overall) of Major League Soccer. He also played professionally for the Jacksonville Cyclones (A-League).
Collegiately, he played three seasons at then Montclair State College from 1989-91, and was part of the Red Hawks’ NJAC championship squad in 1989. He earned a B.A. from Montclair State University in 1995 and a J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law in 2002.
An All-State high school player, Cengarle and da Silva were teammates for three years at Don Bosco Tech in Paterson, NJ from 1985-88. Together, they helped lead the Rams to the 1989 Passaic County championship and two BPSL Carpenter league titles in 1987 and 1988.
Born in Argentina, Cengarle, 37, resides in Bloomfield, NJ with his wife Georgina and daughter Emma.
