Dr. Gerard Anthony Malanga has served as the team physician of New Jersey City University since 1999, and 2004-05 will mark his seventh year serving the University.
 
Malanga is currently the owner/operator of the New Jersey Sports Medicine Institute. He is the former Director of Sports, Spine and Orthopedic Rehabilitation at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange, NJ. He is a board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist who has also completed a sports medicine fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. The Sports Rehabilitation Medicine Fellowship is a one-year program in non-operative sports medicine. The fellowship is sponsored by the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Center, which is a joint venture of the Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Orthopedics.
 
He has expertise in the non-operative treatment of a variety of orthopedic disorders, including neck and back pain as well as shoulder, knee, and other sport medicine and musculoskeletal problems. He performs various injections of joints and the lumbar spine, such as botulinum toxin injections for movement disorders. He also performs electromyography (EMGs) nerve testing.
 
Malanga has published multiple articles regarding various musculoskeletal issues from in-line skating injuries to the treatment of neck and back pain. He has lectured throughout the country on a variety of sports medicine and orthopedic rehabilitation topics.
 
Malanga is a Diplomate of the American College of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a member of the North American Spine society and the American Pain Society.
 
He also teaches his profession to future physicians as an Associate Professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)-New Jersey Medical School in Newark.
Malanga is the current Clinical Chief of Rehabilitation Medicine and Electrodiagnosis at the St. Michael’s Medical Center in Newark, and is the Director of Rehabilitation Medicine and Electrodiagnosis at the West Hudson Hospital in Kearny, NJ. He also is the Medical Director-consultant for the Horizon Healthcare Worker’s Compensation Services and Blue Cross & Blue Shield Worker’s Compensation, a position he has held since December 1997.
 
From 1993-1996, Malanga worked as a Senior Associate Consultant in the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Center/Spine Center in the Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. There he was an Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for the Mayo Medical Schoo
