JERSEY CITY, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)...New Jersey City University
senior left fielder and right-handed pitcher TARA PERRUCCI (East Rutherford, NJ/Wallington) established career school records for games played and started and matched the single-season record with her second grand slam of the season, while serving as the winning pitcher in game two as the Gothic Knights split a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader with Rutgers-Newark on Sunday at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex. Newark won the opening game, 6-4, before Perrucci's arm and bat led NJCU to an 8-3 victory in the nightcap.

NJCU (14-14, 1-9 NJAC) and Rutgers-Newark (11-19, 1-9 NJAC) each win their first conference games of the year with the doubleheader split. NJCU has won five of its last six games. The Knights lead the all-time series against the Scarlet Raiders, 31-28, and have won seven of the last eight meetings.

Perrucci
played and started in her 144th and 145th career games, breaking a tie (143 games) she held in the career category with Susie Matsutani (2005-08), Sharyn Hunchak (1995-98) and Jennifer Ambrose (1994-97). Perrucci, who hit a grand slam on March 9 in a win over Saint Mary's College (Indiana), hit her second grand slam of the season in the second inning of game two, equaling the single-season record of two slams set by Jen Barletta in 2001. Perrucci and Barletta are the only players in program history with more than one career grand slam; Barletta is the all-time leader with three.

Sophomore shortstop MEGAN GINTER (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) went 4-for-6 with three runs scored in the two games and freshman third baseman REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) went 4-for-8 on the day, with two runs scored and two RBI.

Rutgers-Newark jumped out to a 4-0 lead after five innings in the opening game before the Gothic Knights scored three in the bottom of the sixth to draw within one run. The Raiders answered with two in the top of the seventh for a 6-3 advantage, before winning, 6-4. Newark won for just the third time in 18 games this season when outhit by the opposition as NJCU held an 8-6 edge in hits.

Sophomore shortstop Tina Aita (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) was 1-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, including her second homer of the season. Freshman catcher Monica Liotto (Morris Plains, NJ/Parsippany Hills) was 1-for-1 with three walks, two runs and two RBIs while junior outfielder Jessica Zelaya (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) went 2-for-4 with one run.

NJCU received a 2-for-3 effort with one run and one RBI from junior catcher ALEXANDRA DiIORIO (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield). Ginter was 2-for-3 with one run. Freshman second baseman SAMANTHA RUDICK (Closter, NJ/Northern Valley Regional-Demarest) continued to play well in place of injured two-time All-NJAC performer DANIELLE DELFINO (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep). Rudick had two RBIs and was 1-for-3.

Freshman right-hander Angela Riscinti (Linden, NJ/Linden) gained the win for Rutgers-Newark (8-9), giving up four runs—one earned—and eight hits, striking out five and walking one. NJCU rookie righty ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) took the loss (8-8). In 7.0 innings, she allowed six runs—five earned—on six hits, while walking five and striking out one.

The Raiders struck for two runs in the third inning. Riscinti was hit by a pitch and Zelaya singled, before each scored when Liotto delivered a double to left-center.

Riscinti
also helped her own cause in the fourth inning, smacking an RBI single to left field. Liotto walked to lead off the fifth, stole second and scored on an RBI single by junior third baseman Ashley Angeli (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck).

NJCU got on the scoreboard with three runs in their half of the sixth inning. Satz led off the inning with a double to left field. Perrucci reached on a throwing error, which advanced Satz to third. Perrucci moved to second on a ground out. DiIorio singled to left field, scoring Satz. Rudick followed with a double to left-center, scoring Perrucci and DiIorio, as NJCU trailed, 4-3.
Rutgers-Newark added two insurance runs in the seventh inning, when Liotto led-off with a walk and Aita homered to left field.

The Gothic Knights plated a run in the seventh when Ginter led off with a single to left field and later scored on an error with two outs. But NJCU couldn't collect the two additional runs needed to tie it, losing 6-4.

The Gothic Knights bounced back to take the second game 8-3, putting the game out of reach early with a five-run second inning. Four NJCU players had multiple hits as the Knights collected 15.

Perrucci went 2-for-4 with a grand slam—her third homerun of the season—and added a double, driving in four while scoring two runs. She also earned the win on the mound, evening her record at
03-20-10 Rebecca Satz 13
6-6. In 7.0 innings, she allowed just three runs on five hits, walking seven and striking out two.

Satz
went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run and Ginter was 2-for-3 with two runs. Junior catcher TAYLOR LANG (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Freshman pitcher Samantha Veneziano (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) was charged with the loss (3-10). In 7.0 innings, she gave up eight earned runs on 15 hits, walking two and striking out one.

NJCU, the road team in game two by NJAC rule, jumped out a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Ginter led-off the game with a walk, stole second base, and scored on an RBI single by Satz.

NJCU poured on five runs in the second inning. O'Beirne, playing first base, walked and Rudick and Ginter singled to load the bases. Satz delivered a single up the middle for a 2-0 lead with two outs. With the bases still loaded, Perrucci stepped in and unloaded her grand slam over the left field fence for a 6-0 lead.
