Freshman KELLY DAUNNO (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) placed ninth overall in the individual standings with a 187.20 average on a difficult pattern, but the #9 ranked New Jersey City University women's bowling team had a rare off day, finishing ninth overall in the team standings after the opening day of the sixth annual Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's Bowling Championship at Howell Lanes.

NJCU, which had hosted the previous five ECAC championship events, is not hosting this year because the Gothic Knights will host the 2010 National Collegiate Women's Bowling Championship on April 8-10 in North Brunswick, NJ.

NJCU, currently ranked No. 9 nationally among Division I, II and III institutions, has seldom experienced a winless day in its illustrious history, but went 0-4 in NCAA competition, including three losses to nationally ranked opponents.

The Knights lost by a mere eight pins to cross-city rival Saint Peter's College, 798-790, before dropping an 871-857, 14-pin setback to #20 ranked Morgan State University. After a blind game in which NJCU bowled only for pinfall in the team standings (858 score) due to an odd number of teams in the field, the Knights held the lead over #1 ranked Vanderbilt University, before dropping an 841-763 decision. In the final match of the day, NJCU again led a Top 3 opponent, this time #3 ranked Delaware State University, until the 10th frame when the Hornets rallied for a 949-886 decision. All games were five-person traditional team games.

Despite the 0-4 result, NJCU still owns a 60-30 record (.667) this year and a 25-8 ledger since January 29. The Knights are also 34-24 against ranked opponents this year. In season series, NJCU leads SPC, 3-2, and is even with Morgan State, 1-1. Meanwhile, top-ranked Vanderbilt now leads the series, 2-1 over the Knights. DSU has won all three meetings.

KELLY DAUNNO was ninth overall among 73 bowlers in standings determined by total pinfall. In five games, she collected 936 pins (216-167-245-139-169). Her 216 came in the loss to SPC.

Junior NICOLE DREJERWSKI (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) listed 25th with an 811 pinfall (162.20 average), with games of 144-188-155-135-196. Her high of 196 kept NJCU in the match with Delaware State until the end.

Senior anchor JENN MARMO (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon (NY)) collected 802 pins (134-158-178-158-160) and was 29th. She was the final NJCU bowler to compete in all five games.

Sophomore AMY BREHM (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) bowled the final four games and performed well with a 690 pinfall (174-160-177-179) and 172.5 average on the difficult pattern, listing 39th. Also for NJCU, in four games, senior CANDICE D'ANGELO (Coram, NY/Longwood (NY) had a 619 pin count and was 44th. Sophomore #JENNIFER DAUNNO# (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) bowled two games and had total wood of 310, including a 182 in the loss to DSU.

No. 4 ranked Fairleigh Dickinson University, the host team this season, leads after day one with 4,667 pins. Vanderbilt is 54 pins behind with 4,613. No. 10 St. Francis College is third (4,464), followed by Delaware State (4,455) and #12 Kutztown University (4,356). NJCU is 513 pins behind FDU at 4,154.

The second day of the two-day event begins on Sunday, March 7 at 9:30 a.m. NJCU will face three schools in quad-Baker matches before two best 4-out-of-7 playoff Baker matches determined by the standings.
