BROOKLYN, NY (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)...With some of the most important games in recent program history on the horizon, the New Jersey City University women's basketball team continued to roll in non-conference action. The Gothic Knights won their third game in four outings, using its defense to force 35 turnovers which translated into a 34-10 margin in points off giveaways as NJCU downed New York City College of Technology, 62-46, on Monday night at Klitgord Gymnasium.
NJCU (7-15), since opening the year 0-7 and 2-11 overall, mostly against top competition, have turned its season around in late January and February. Since losing to Montclair State University on January 13, the Knights are 5-4, and with three New Jersey Athletic Conference games remaining in the next 10 days, are in position to qualify for the league tournament for the first time in 21 years with one more win.
With the loss, City Tech dropped to 3-20, losing its seventh straight. NJCU, which outscored the Yellow Jackets bench by a decisive 26-0 count, leads the all-time series, 5-0.
For NJCU, freshman point guard (East Orange, NJ/East Orange Campus) had 16 points (6-18 FG), eight rebounds, five steals and three assists in 27 minutes off the bench.
Freshman forward LINDIA FISCHER (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds (seven offensive), with six points and two steals. She reached double figures in rebounds for the seventh time this season. Freshman guard PRIA DUHANEY (Union, NJ/Orange) registered six points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The hosts received a game-high 24 points (10-17 FG) with six rebounds, four steals and two assists in 40 minutes from Christine Jackson. Junior forward Tempestt Casey (Bronx, NY) had a double-double of 13 rebounds (eight defensive) and 10 rebounds with two blocks in 39 minutes, but shot 4-of-17. Ayana Cinque added 13 rebounds, but had 14 turnovers.
There were two ties and three lead changes in the first 11 minutes of action. Cinque broke a 10-10 tie with a layup off a feed from Jackson with 9:05 left in the first half.
But the Yellow Jackets only provided assists on two of their 19 field goals and NJCU knotted it at 12-12 with 8:50 left when Cunningham sank a pair of foul shots. After Duhaney scored off a Johnson assist with 7:36 left, NJCU took the lead (14-12) and never trailed again. In fact, the Knights went on 10-1 run, with Johnson scoring seven points as NJCU claimed a 22-13 margin, before heading to the break ahead by five, 26-21.
The Knights burst out of the locker room scoring the first nine points of the second half—five by Cunningham—for a 14-point, 35-21 advantage and led by double figures the remainder of the contest. NJCU's lead swelled to 19—54-35—on a Johnson layup off a Cunningham steal and assist, with 6:01 to go before Cunningham drilled a three with 5:16 left for the largest lead of the night, 57-37 (20 points).
Weather-permitting, NJCU will return to action on Wednesday, February 10 at 6 p.m. against Montclair State University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference North Division game in Montclair, NJ.
