The #9 ranked New Jersey City University women’s bowling team enjoyed one of its finest days in regular season program history on January 30, going 6-0 in NCAA competition, including a rout of #1 ranked Vanderbilt University, while surging into second place among 28 teams on day two of the three-day second annual Kutztown University Invitational at Heister Lanes.

The Gothic Knights (43-22), ranked No. 9 nationally among Division I, II and III institutions, were one of just two schools to go undefeated on the day and the only team that bowled better than 1,000 in each game during the six traditional game format. NJCU extended its winning streak to eight consecutive matches.

NJCU was in second place of 28 schools in what is the largest NCAA bowling event in the country this year, tallying 6,236 pins—just 34 pins behind #2 ranked and first-place University of Maryland Eastern Shore. No. 4 Fairleigh Dickinson University was third—more than 100 pins behind NJCU (6,132), with host and #12 Kutztown University (5953) and #17 Sacred Heart University (5779) rounding out the Top 5.

In the six matches, NJCU defeated #19 Norfolk State University, 1005-873 and #7 Adelphi University, 1040-952, before crushing unranked Howard University by 314 pins, 1078-764. The Knights manhandled Cheyney University by 428 pins, 1070-642, before notching its third straight lopsided decision, a 1042-718, 324-pin victory over fellow Division III program Penn State University-Altoona.

But the highlight was the final match of the day as the Knights achieved an important 99-pin win over the #1 ranked team in the country, Vanderbilt, by a 1001-902 margin.

It was also a memorable day for three NJCU veterans—junior NICOLE DREJERWSKI (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) and seniors JENN MARMO (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon (NY)) and CANDICE D’ANGELO (Coram, NY/Longwood (NY). Drejerwski and Marmo tied for fourth place while D’Angelo was seventh in the individual standings among a field of 184 bowlers.

FRANK PARISI, in his 10th year as the only coach in NJCU history, put the team’s performance into perspective. “When you consider everything—our record, performance and consistency—it was arguable one of the greatest days in the program’s history.”

Individually, NJCU had four bowlers place in the Top 25. Drejerwski, competing in her home state, was tied for fourth of 184 players with a 1,298 total pinfall—just four pins out of first place and 26 behind the leader—finishing with a 216.33 average and five games of 210 or better. She tallied games of 187-225-245-210-217-214.

Marmo tied Drejerwski in the standings with 1,298 pinfall and a 216.33 average, while rolling 207 or better in all six games and three games of 220+ results. She had games of 214-223-222-208-207-224.

D’Angelo had the highest score by any NJCU kegler with a 265, and finished seventh overall with pinfall of 1,283 and a 213.83 average. She had six-game totals of 191-233-198-264-209-187.

Freshman KELLY DAUNNO (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) was the only other NJCU player to bowl in all six games, and she performed well, placing 23rd overall with pinfall of 1,171 for a 195.17 average, and a high game of 244. Her game scores were 200-179-244-165-198-185.

Sophomores AMY BREHM (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) and JENNIFER DAUNNO (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) split time.

Brehm bowled the final three games and was impressive with a 624 series (222-211-191) and a 208.00 average. While she was 127th in the standings based on total pinfall, she was one of only 29 players to average at least 200 while competing in three or more games. Additionally, Brehm was among just 15 players who averaged at least a 208 with three or more games rolled.

Jennifer Daunno bowled the first three games for the Knights, finishing with a 562 pinfall (213-180-169) and a 187.33 average, placing 136th.

In the opening match, NJCU defeated Norfolk for the second time in as many days and improved to 3-1 overall against the Spartans this year. In the 132-pin decision, three NJCU players rolled a 200, led by Marmo at 214 and Jennifer Daunno with a 213.

Adelphi will be one of the schools NJCU competes with this season for an NCAA Tournament berth, and the Knights picked up a critical 88-pin victory in their second match of the day. D’Angelo led the trio of veterans with a 233 game, while Drejerwski and Marmo contributed scores of 225 and 223, respectively. The Panthers own a 4-3 season advantage against NJCU.

In the first meeting this year against Howard, the Knights defeated the Bison behind two sensational efforts. Drejerwski unleashed a 245 and Kelly Daunno uncorked a 244, while Marmo tacked on a 222 as the Knights posted their highest game total of the day with a 1,078.

When NJCU downed Cheyney by 428 pins in the fourth game, D’Angelo achieved her team’s best individual score of the tournament with a 265. Brehm added a 222 as four of the five Gothic Knight starters bowled 200 games. It was NJCU’s most lopsided win since a 464-pin decision against Long Island University on November 22, 2008.

In the first-ever meeting between NJCU and PSU-Altoona, the Knights again had four players bowl at least 200, led by Drejerwski with a 217. The Knights are a perfect 5-0 against fellow Division III opponents this season.

The Knights actually had their lowest score of the competition in the win over #1 Vanderbilt, as NJCU evened the season series with the Commodores at 1-1; Vandy defeated NJCU by 23 pins—1,026-1,003—on November 20, in another well-bowled effort by the Knights. In the win over the #1 Commodores, Marmo led NJCU with a 224 and Drejerwski collected a 214, as the Knights prevailed 1001-902.
