DESERIA SANDERS (Lakewood, NJ/Long Branch) has been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for week eight of the 2009 season after qualifying for the NCAA Championship in the long jump. It is her second conference award in as many weeks, after she was named the NJAC Rookie of the Week on May 4.
On May 9 at the 2009 NYC Qualifying Challenge at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island, Sanders shattered one of the oldest remaining school records and qualified for the2009 NCAA Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the long jump as she soared 5.60 meters (18-4.5). That distance broke NJCU’s third-oldest school record, bettering the more than the nine-year-old Gothic Knight standard of 5.55 meters (18-2.5) set by Mary Jones on March 25, 2000 in Montclair, NJ. It’s the 22nd best distance in the country this year.
Sanders, the 2009 NJAC Rookie of the Year, placed eighth of 14 Division I, II and III athletes in the long jump. Her distance easily surpassed the NCAA provisional mark of 5.47 meters.
In the 200-meter dash, she posted her second best time of the year, surpassing the ECAC qualifying standard of 26.12 seconds, to place 11th of 27.
