DESERIA SANDERS SHATTERS NINE-YEAR OLD SCHOOL RECORD IN LONG JUMP, QUALIFIES FOR 2009 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP

- Deseria Sanders shattered a nine-year old school record in the long jump, sailing nearly 18 and a half feet.

Freshman DESERIA SANDERS (Lakewood, NJ/Long Branch) shattered one of the oldest remaining school records and qualified for the2009 NCAA Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the long jump as the New Jersey City University women's outdoor track and field team competed on May 9 at the 2009 NYC Qualifying Challenge.
 
There was no team scoring in the event hosted at Icahn Stadium by the Randall's Island Sports Foundation.
 
Sanders soared 5.60 meters (18-4.5) and broke NJCU's third-oldest school record when she placed eighth of 14 Division I, II and III athletes in the long jump. Her distance easily surpassed the NCAA provisional mark of 5.47 meters and broke a nine-year-old school record of 5.55 meters (18-2.5) set by Mary Jones on March 25, 2000 in Montclair, NJ. It's the 22nd best distance in the country this year.
 
In the 200-meter dash, she posted her second best time of the year, surpassing the ECAC qualifying standard of 26.12 seconds, to place 11th of 27.
 
Junior CANDICE BELLAMY (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) was 21st in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.76 seconds. In the 1500-meter run, freshman DANIELLE COLON (Pleasantville, NJ/Pleasantville) was 21st in a time of 5:59.26.
 
The 2009 Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship will be held on May 14-15 at Springfield College's Blake Track in Springfield, MA. Qualifying for the championship are senior five-time All-American EBONY BARNES (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) in the 100-meter dash and Sanders in the 200-meter dash and long jump.
