'BERGER'S BLOG: 2009 PART 5—CITI FIELD

Office of Sports Information note: This is fifth installment of a series of NJCU baseball blogs by freshman first baseman/outfielder JOE STEINBERGER (San Diego, CA/San Diego). The West Coast-native is also a sports writer for “The Gothic Times” student newspaper.

PART 1: Allow Me to Introduce Myself
PART 2: One Outta Two Ain't Bad
PART 3: The Florida Take
PART 4: Do or Die Time

Wow, Citi Field is unreal. Tonight, April 15, I was lucky enough to attend the Padres-Mets game. Yes I said Padres-Mets; it doesn’t matter how bad they are, the Padres will always be my team. When I first got to the ballpark, I was in awe. The field looked tremendous. The seats were excellent. And there was good food to eat—a bit over priced, but still good.

The part I liked the most was that it is unique. I like it when a ballpark has its own personality and is not asymmetrical. Boring! It’s not as exciting when a ballpark doesn’t have any nooks and crannies. Why is it that we like the old stadiums like Fenway, and Wrigley and Yankee Stadium? Because they are unique and no one will ever mistake them for another ballpark. Well done New York Mets, I never thought I would say that.

As for my seats, they were pretty good. I was sitting in the second deck in left center, eight rows up. It was nice, I was able to see most of the field and I had a good view of the strike zone. The part that shocked me, though, was the price. For the same price for my tickets tonight, I could have field level seats at Petco Park in San Diego. But, I guess that’s New York for you. But trust me, I got my money’s worth.

The only real downside to my whole experience was that my Padres lost. Yea, yea I know it’s only the Padres. In all seriousness, though, I do recommend going to see Citi Field as soon as possible. It’s a great new ballpark that Mets fans will be able to enjoy for years to come.

Sports Information Note: Steinberger attended the game with fellow NJCU baseball players Michael Fiorentino, Mark Hoyer and Thomas Vermazen; Fiorentino is the only known Mets fan amongst this bunch.
