BOX SCORE

UNION, NJ…
When game two of the New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader between New Jersey City University and Kean University was halted on Tuesday afternoon due to rain, the Gothic Knights held a 2-0 lead. On Thursday, the two schools replayed the contest from the start and Kean scored five times in the second inning, en route to an 8-0 win over the Knights in five innings at Cougar Field.

NJCU officially won the opening game on April 14, 2-1, so with the doubleheader split, the Knights fall to 14-16 overall and 4-8 in the league while the Cougars are 14-16 and 5-7 NJAC. Kean leads the all-time series, 37-6.

Junior right-hander pitcher Cassie Shotwell (Dunellen, NJ/Dunellen) starred on the mound and at the plate for Kean. In five innings, she allowed just three singles and a walk to earn the win (7-8). At the plate, she hit 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run.

Sophomore second baseman DANIELLE DELFINO (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) had her fourth multiple hit game in five outings for NJCU, finishing 2-for-2.

Kean senior catcher Jesse Buchanan (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) and sophomore left fielder Lindsay Kennedy (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) each had two RBIs. Junior designated player Allison Thibault (Garfield, NJ/Garfield) was 2-for-3 with an RBI while junior centerfielder Allison Lizzi (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) was 2-for-2 with two runs.

Freshman shortstop MEGAN GINTER (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) had NJCU’s third hit. Senior right-hander pitcher LACEY SKOWRONSKI (Bayonne, NJ/Holy Family Academy) took the loss for NJCU, falling to 8-8. She allowed seven earned runs and 10 hits with one strikeout.

Kean sent nine batters to the plate in the fifth inning. When two Cougars reached on fielder’s choices off sacrifice bunts and no outs were recorded, Kean took advantage of the extra outs. Shotwell had a two-run single with the bases loaded. Buchanan followed with a two-run double and Kennedy made it 5-0 with an RBI single.

In the third inning, Kean added a pair of runs when sophomore first baseman Katie Yard (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) had an RBI double and Thibault had a run-producing infield hit. Kean’s final run in the fifth inning, on a sacrifice fly, gave the Cougars enough of a lead for the game to end after five innings due to the eight-run rule.

NJCU is back in action on Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m. when it travels to Pomona, NJ for an NJAC doubleheader with Richard Stockton College.
