JERSEY CITY, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)...
New Jersey City University junior setter ALEX JOHANESEN (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) of the women’s volleyball team and junior SIDNEY MABEYA (Jersey City, NJ/Ferris) of the men’s cross country and track and field team, are the 2008-09 winners of the Gothic Knight Academic Achievement Awards.

Johanesen and Mabeya received their awards prior to NJCU's women's volleyball match with Richard Stockton College on October 6.

The award, which is based strictly on academic performance, rather than on athletic ability, has been bestowed among some outstanding athletes over the years and the 2008-09 winners are certainly accomplished in their sports.

Johanesen, a 2009 NJCU co-captain, is third in school history in total assists, entering the weekend with 1,980 for her career, and has been among the top setters in the New Jersey Athletic Conference her entire three-year tenure with the Knights.

An English major at NJCU, Johanesen owned a 3.936 GPA as of the cutoff date for the award—the highest GPA of any active sophomore-level or higher student-athlete at the University. She was a First-Team Academic All-NJAC selection during the 2008-09 year and a CoSIDA Academic All-District nominee. Johanesen is a previous NJAC Player of the Week recipient in 2008 and a 2007 two-time conference Rookie of the Week.

Mabeya earned Second-Team Academic All-NJAC honors in June. A Business Administration major with a 3.713 GPA, he has achieved success on the cross country terrain, finishing first among NJCU runners in all six races the Gothic Knights competed in during his rookie campaign in 2007.
