GAME PROGRAM

JERSEY CITY, NJ…New Jersey City University
had four players reach double figures, led by 18 points and nine rebounds in 21 minutes from freshman small forward RASHAWN SMALLS (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) and four three-pointers by senior guard KYLE INGRAM (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township), and the Gothic Knights committed only eight turnovers in 40 minutes one game after giving up 31 in a loss on Wednesday, as NJCU cruised past Rutgers University-Camden, 84-64, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference men’s game on Charlie Brown Court at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on Saturday.

NJCU snaps a three-game losing streak and improves to 2-3 overall and 1-1 NJAC. Camden falls to 3-5 (0-2 NJAC). The Gothic Knights defeated the Raptors for the 39th time in the last 40 meetings and lead the all-time series by a commanding 49-4 margin. It was NJCU’s 11th straight win over the Raptors.

NJCU committed only two turnovers in the second half. Leading 34-33 at the intermission, the Knights unleashed a 19-5 run to open the second half, and constructed a 15-point lead with 14:31 left as Ingram canned back-to-back three-pointers in a span of 15 seconds to stake the Knights to a 53-38 lead. NJCU was never challenged from there, leading by double figures the remainder of the game, with its largest lead being 22 in the final minute.

The eight turnovers were the fewest since losing seven against FDU-Florham on February 28, 2007. NJCU turned 23 Camden giveaways into a decisive 34-7 margin in points off turnovers. NJCU also had a 17-6 cushion on the offensive glass and held a 17-0 difference in second chance scoring.

Smalls
finished with 18 points to lead NJCU in scoring for the fourth time in five games to begin his career while keeping pace with his NJAC-best 19.0 per game scoring average. Despite sitting much of the second half in foul trouble, he made 6-of-10 from the field with his nine rebounds and dished three assists.

11-15-08 Kyle Ingram 9.jpg
Kyle Ingram poured in four three-pointers and keyed NJCU's decisive second half outburst.
Ingram
had three triples during NJCU’s second half spurt and finished with 16 points on 5-of-14 shooting and 4-of-6 from long distance, adding five steals. Behind his efforts, NJCU shot 50.0 percent from three-point distance (9-of-18).

Junior point guard JOSH LOPEZ (Jersey City, NJ/St. Mary’s (Jersey City)) collected 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting and improved to an NJAC-leading 11-of-12 from the free-throw line this year. Freshman guard IBN TOWNES (Newark, NJ/Westside) had a breakout effort for NJCU off the bench, pouring in career highs of 13 points (5-14 FG) and nine rebounds in 27 minutes—all nine on the offensive glass.

Also for NJCU, freshman forward FARRAKHAN WELLS (Newark, NJ/Westside) had seven points and freshman center TAQUAN ABDULLAH (Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearley) contributed six points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Camden received a game-high 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting and 3-of-3 three-point accuracy from senior guard Bill Banks (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional). Junior swingman Chris Clahar (Philadelphia, PA/Robert Lamberton) added 11 points (4-8 FG).

There were seven ties and 10 lead changes in the first half before Ingram put NJCU ahead to stay with a three with 11 seconds remaining in the period. Ingram hit a key triple with 18:26 remaining for a 40-33 lead. Camden was down by three, 41-38 after Clahar converted a three-point play with 16:53 left.

But NJCU unleashed a 12-0 spurt over a span of 2:12. An offensive rebound and putback by Smalls followed by a steal and fast-break basket by Lopez made it 45-38 before Ingram picked off a pass and fed Smalls for a fast-break jam and a 47-38 lead. Ingram followed with his two triples for a 53-38 advantage. A pair of Lopez free throws and a layup at 12:41 by Wells extended the run to 23-6 and 16-1 since the 16:53 mark and NJCU cruised from there.

NJCU will be back in action on Monday, December 8 at 7 p.m. when it hosts Berkeley College in a non-conference game. Camden next plays on Wednesday, December 10 at 7 p.m. when it hosts Arcadia College.
