JERSEY CITY, NJ…New Jersey City University junior shortstop JOSE FULGENCIO (Bronx, NY/San Rafael, Dominican Republic) and junior centerfielder ROB SUMNER (Union, NJ/Union) have been voted to the 2007 NCAA Division III/ABCA Second-Team All-Mid Atlantic Region All-Star team by the American Baseball Coaches Association. It is the first time in school history that NJCU has had two players earn All-Region honors in the same season. Sumner, who was also named Second-Team All-Mid Atlantic in 2006, becomes the first player in program history to be a two-time All-Region selection.

Fulgencio, a Second-Team Division II/III All-State pick by the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association and Honorable Mention All-New Jersey Athletic Conference selection, finished the year with the longest hitting streak in Division III this season—a school record 27 consecutive games. The pro prospect who hit safely in 36 of NJCU's 37 games this year and reached base by hit or walk in all 37 contests, saw his streak begin on March 25, and it never ended in his first season as a Gothic Knight. He became NJCU's shortstop to earn All-State honors since Hall-of-Famer Joe Wells in 1980.

The nephew of former major leaguer and New York Mets and Yankees shortstop Rafael Santana finished the year as the team's leading hitter at .418 (59-for-141), starting all 37 games. He drove in 44 RBIs, primarily as NJCU's No. 3 hitter, scored 34 runs, and collected 22 extra base hits—14 doubles, five triples and three homeruns. Additionally, he was 20-for-22 in steals, and struck out only 12 times. Combined with seven walks and two hit by pitch and four sacrifices, he fanned in only 7.8 percent of all plate appearances. He posted a .652 slugging percentage and .447 on-base rate with 92 total bases.

A solid fielder, he committed only 14 errors in 205 chances at shortstop, fielding .932 overall. Last year, NJCU has 29 errors at the position. He had a single-season school record 132 assists, adding Jose Fulgencio59 putouts, and helped turn 23 double plays.

Fulgencio led the Knights in batting, hits, RBIs, doubles, triples and total bases, and was second in runs, steals and homers. His 44 RBIs were second most in single-season NJCU history—four shy of matching the 1988 record of 48. His 59 hits were tied for second on the list, while he was tied for fourth all-time in doubles, games started and double plays turned, and fifth in total bases.

Sumner, who was named Third-Team All-State earlier in the month, posted another terrific all-around season, as he batted .385 (52-135) with 45 runs, 35 RBIs, seven doubles, six homeruns and three triples, while walking 24 times. In 37 games (all starts) he swiped 24 bases in 32 attempts. He carried over a hitting streak from last season, before it ended at 17-straight games—the fourth longest in club history. He also had a .479 on-base and .615 slugging percentage and fielded at a .985 rate with only one error in 65 chances.

Sumner, who became the second player in NJCU history named National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association (NCBWA) Division III National Hitter of the Week honors on March 22, also earned NJCBA Division II/III, Gotham Baseball Division I, II and III, and ECAC and NJAC Player of the Week honors.

He led NJCU in runs, steals and homeruns. With 136 runs in three years and at least 45 in every season, Sumner became NJCU's all-time leader in that category in only three years. This season he was second on the club in average, hits, RBIs, doubles, triples and total bases (83).

Sumner is second all-time in school history with 78 steals, needing one to tie the all-time program record. Now a career .388 hitter with a .484 on-base percentage in his career, he ranks third in NJCU history in total bases (226), fourth in hits (155) and walks (73), tied for fourth with 10 homers, tied for fifth with 11 triples, and sixth in RBIs (89). In 2008, Sumner will need 13 hits, 38 RBIs and 44 total bases to become NJCU's all-time leader in those categories.
